Goldy Brar, a prominent gangster from Punjab and the main suspect in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, has sparked renewed interest as Canada has reportedly been providing mixed signals regarding his whereabouts.
Following Moosewala’s assassination in May 2022, Punjab Police asserted that they had informed the Government of India of Goldy’s exact location in Canada, but received little cooperation from Canadian security agencies. Punjab Police officials have raised concerns about Canada’s inconsistent approach, noting that while Goldy was removed from their “most wanted list,” he and his associate Lawrence Bishnoi were still being implicated in the June 2023 killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey. Some officials suspect that Goldy may be being protected by a Canadian agency or other groups within the country.
Former Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, also criticized Ottawa regarding Goldy’s situation. In a recent interview, Verma confirmed that Goldy was in Canada and questioned why he had been taken off the wanted list after being placed there at India’s request. He speculated whether Goldy was either arrested or deemed no longer a suspect.
Verma stated that India had shared information about Goldy and Bishnoi with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, indicating that Canadian authorities were informed about these gangsters by Indian agencies, rather than discovering them independently.
Additionally, officials from Punjab Police, who preferred to remain anonymous, supported Verma’s assertions. They noted that Goldy was allegedly on a video call with an associate shortly before Moosewala’s murder, during which he gathered information about the singer’s movements. The IP address of that call was traced back to Canada, and the authorities there were provided with Goldy’s student visa details, confirming his arrival in Canada on March 17, 2017.
A police official mentioned, “After Moosewala’s murder, we shared comprehensive details about Goldy with Canada. He entered the country on a study visa, utilizing his actual passport number. If he has traveled from Canada to any other location, Canadian authorities should be able to verify that.”
