Relief to Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav; CAT rejects former DGP’s plea challenging appointment

Chandigarh: Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav has got a big relief from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). CAT has rejected the petition filed by senior state IPS officer and former DGP VK Bhawra against his appointment to the post of DGP. A detailed order in this regard will come soon.

What’s the matter?
Former DGP, IPS VK Bhawra challenged the appointment of current DGP Punjab, Gaurav Yadav and sought his reinstatement.

Former DGP VK Bhawra

IPS VK Bhawra was appointed as Punjab DGP on January 8, 2022, for a minimum period of two years.

After Mann government in 2022 took charge after getting a huge mandate, Bhawra was “pressurised to relinquish the charge and it was perceived that he was appointee of the previous government”, the application filed by him said.

He also mentioned that he as soon as he took charge he was being asked to partake in various illegal acts which included but were not limited to register to cases against various public figures, granting of security of the contingent of Punjab Police outside the State to various dignitaries and various other coercive measures.

Later he requested for leave for a period of 60 days in the month of July 2022, almost six months after taking the charge of the post of DGP. In his absence, additional charge of the post of Punjab DGP was given to Gaurav Yadav.

Later on Septemeber 4, 2022, day before the completion of VK Bhawra’s leave period, Orders were given about his appointment as the Chairman of Punjab Police Housing Corporation. DGP Gauarv Yadav remained Punjab DGP thereafter. VK Bhawra termed the appointment illegal and sought his reinstatement as Punjab DGP.
