Sangrur spurious liquor case: Hearing in HC today; demand of impartial investigation, curb on sale of methanol raised

Chandigarh: The matter of investigation into the death of 21 people due to spurious liquor in Sangrur, Punjab has reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. There will be a hearing in this matter today.

A public interest litigation was filed in the High Court on behalf of Bikramjit Singh, a resident of Mohali, in the last week of March.

On behalf of the petitioner, it has been argued in the court that there is a code of conduct in the state regarding the Lok Sabha elections, but despite this, permission is being given to sell poisonous liquor.

He has also placed in the court the figures of deaths in 8 villages of Sangrur district. He also demanded that there should be an impartial investigation into this matter, so that such situations do not arise again. On behalf of the petitioner, it was told in the court that methanol was used in poisonous liquor. It is being said that Methanol is dangerous for humans and is easily available online. Appropriate action has been sought in the case.
