Amid the ongoing dispute between Punjab and Haryana over the water of Bhakra-Beas, a special session of the Punjab Assembly is going to be held today (May 5). The session will begin at 11 am. During this time, a proposal to not give water to Haryana will be passed. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has given permission for the special session.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said that he is not going to back down on this issue. Haryana has already used its allotted share of water. We are giving them water on humanitarian grounds. At the same time, if needed, leaders of all parties will talk to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this matter.
Earlier, both states had held separate all-party meetings. In these, all the parties supported the decision of the governments while remaining loyal to their state.
The water dispute between Punjab and Haryana started on 28 April. A meeting of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) was held, in which the Punjab government made it clear that it would not give additional water to Haryana.
