Chandigarh, July 3: Due to heavy rains in Chandigarh on Monday, the water level of Sukhna Lake reached 1158.5 feet, while the danger mark is 1163 feet. At present, the water level is just 4.5 feet below the danger mark. According to officials, due to the rains yesterday, the water level of the lake has increased by about one foot.
Control Room and CCTV set up for 24×7 monitoring
Currently, the UT Engineering Department has set up a 24-hour control room to monitor the lake and CCTV cameras have also been installed. A department official informed that if the water level of the lake crosses the danger mark, the flood gates will be opened and water will be released into the Sukhna Cho (drain) so that a flood-like situation does not arise in the city.
It is worth noting that due to the scorching heat and strong sunlight in the past few days, the water level of the lake had decreased to 1156.5 feet on June 14, which was even lower than the 1157 feet recorded on May 15. At present, today there is bright sunshine in the entire city and the clouds have cleared.
No immediate threat, Says Administration
It is being estimated that if the weather remains the same and it does not rain, then the water level of the lake may decrease slightly. The officials have also clarified that even if the water level reaches the danger mark, the excess water will be released into Sukhna Lake, so that the city dwellers do not have to face a flood-like situation.
