Triple Murder Case Morinda: Convict gets imprisonment of 70 years

Chandigarh: The sessions court has sentenced Alam, the accused of a triple murder in Morinda, Punjab, to 70 years of imprisonment. The accused had hacked his wife, sister-in-law and wife’s nephew with an axe. Alam, a 28-year-old man has been convicted for committing three murders and an attempt to murder.

The accused will have to spend a total of 70 years in jail. On the night of June 3, 2020, Alam killed his wife Kajal, sister-in-law Jaspreet Kaur and her son Sahil with an axe while they were sleeping and also attempted to kill his sister-in-law’s other son Bobby, who was living in his wife’s ancestral house in Morinda. Agreeing with the argument of advocate Ramesh Kumari, the District and Sessions Judge, Rupnagar convicted Alam and held him guilty of murder under Section 302 of the IPC and attempted to murder under Section 307.

The court applied Section 57 of the IPC in the case, which provides for a punishment of 20 years to life imprisonment. Based on this section, Alam will remain in jail for 60 years, that is, 20 years each under Section 302 of the IPC (for three offences), and 10 more years for the offence under Section 307. The total imprisonment accounts to 70 years.

Morinda SHO Sunil Kumar told the media that the accused is a resident of Nakodar. Investigation revealed that he suspected his wife of having an illicit relationship during the Covid period. The complainant’s mother-in-law in the case locked herself in a room and fled. Her nine-month-old son was sleeping beside her when he attacked his wife with an axe. He went on to kill his sister-in-law, her son and injure another child. After the incident, he consumed a poisonous substance and was admitted to a hospital, from where he was arrested.
