Weather Update: Heat wave across state, Ludhiana remains hottest @ 43.6 degrees

Ludhiana : The maximum temperature in Amritsar, Faridkot, Barnala, Ferozepur was 41 degree Celsius. While the temperature was recorded at 40 degrees Celsius in Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ropar and Patiala, 39.9 degrees in Chandigarh and 39.5 degrees Celsius in SBS Nagar. On the other hand, according to the Meteorological Department, there will be intense heat in many districts of Punjab on May 8 and 9.

As the month of May begins, the heat has increased in Punjab. The sun has been pouring fire for the last four days. However, the Meteorological Department has not confirmed the rain.

Tuesday was the hottest day of the year and the maximum temperature in Ludhiana reached 43.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 22.4 degrees Celsius. It remained three degrees above the maximum temperature and two degrees Celsius above the minimum temperature.

Ludhiana remained the hottest in Punjab for the fourth consecutive day. According to Weather Center Chandigarh, for the first time in the year, the maximum temperature of Ludhiana has crossed 43 degrees Celsius in the first seven days of May.

While during the year 2011 to 2023, the temperature above 43 degrees Celsius has been recorded only after May 15. In the year 2019, the maximum temperature was 43.7 degrees on May 19, 43.5 degrees on May 30 in 2014, 43.1 degrees on May 28 in 2021 and 45.9 degrees Celsius on May 23 in 2023.

It may be mentioned here that the temperature in Ludhiana rose by 11 degrees Celsius within a week. The heat has picked up speed in other districts too. The maximum temperature in Amritsar, Faridkot, Barnala, Ferozepur was 41 degree Celsius. While the temperature was recorded at 40 degrees Celsius in Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ropar and Patiala, 39.9 degrees in Chandigarh and 39.5 degrees Celsius in SBS Nagar.

On the other hand, according to the Meteorological Department, there will be intense heat in many districts of Punjab on May 8 and 9. In many districts, the day temperature can reach up to 44 degree Celsius.

However, from the evening of May 10, strong winds will start blowing over Punjab due to activation of Western Disturbance. Wind speed can be 25 to 30 km per hour. On May 11 and 12, there is a possibility of thunder and light rain in many districts. Vegetables and horticultural crops may be affected by rising temperatures. For this reason, the farmers are advised to keep irrigating at small intervals to protect the crops from heat.
