A Punjabi-origin brother and sister have filed a lawsuit seeking ₹558.4 crore (80 million Canadian dollars) in damages against the Peel Regional Police in Canada. The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday, May 20, through their lawyer, Frederick Schumann.
The case is linked to the 2023 murder of an elderly Punjabi Sikh couple in Ontario, who were allegedly killed in a case of mistaken identity.
Elderly Punjabi Couple Shot Dead in Ontario
Jagtar Sidhu and Harbhajan Sidhu were visiting their children, Jaspreet Kaur Sidhu (31) and Gurdit Singh Sidhu (29), in Caledon, Ontario, when gunmen opened fire at their home on November 20, 2023.
Police officers reached the scene shortly before midnight and found Jagtar Sidhu dead. His wife, Harbhajan Sidhu, was critically injured and later died in hospital.
Their daughter, Jaspreet Kaur Sidhu, survived despite being shot 13 times.
Family Alleges Police Failed to Warn Them
According to the lawsuit, Peel police officers had visited the Sidhu family home four days before the shooting but allegedly failed to warn them about any possible threat.
The family claims police should have known there was serious danger because the case involved associates of alleged Canadian gangster Ryan Wedding.
The lawsuit argues that police failed to properly investigate the matter and did not alert the family, despite knowing the risks.
“I Heard My Mother’s Last Screams”
Recalling the horrifying night, Jaspreet Kaur Sidhu said:
“I remember that night, my parents were murdered before my eyes. My father was shot in front of me. I heard my mother’s last screams. After that, there was only the sound of gunfire.”
Jaspreet Still Recovering After 13 Bullet Wounds
In the legal claim, Jaspreet said she spent months in hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds from her shoulders to her feet.
She underwent an 18-hour surgery to save her life and temporarily lost the ability to speak because bullets struck her throat and stomach.
According to the lawsuit, one bullet remains lodged near her spine. She is also suffering from nerve damage, severe emotional trauma, and has been unable to work or walk properly since the attack.
Lawyer Says Lawsuit Seeks Police Accountability
Frederick Schumann, one of the lawyers representing the Sidhu family, said the lawsuit aims to hold police accountable for their actions.
Meanwhile, Peel Regional Police defended themselves, stating they had no information suggesting the residents at that address were under threat.
Mistaken Identity Linked to Drug Gang Feud
Investigators later revealed that the Sidhu family was not the intended target.
According to allegations made by the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California in October 2024, alleged drug gang leader Ryan Wedding and associate Andrew Clark had ordered the killing of a man named Bobby over a stolen drug shipment.
While searching for Bobby, the attackers allegedly arrived at the Sidhu family home by mistake and opened fire.
Ryan Wedding was arrested in Mexico in January 2026. The murders were investigated by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), which later confirmed the Sidhu family had been wrongly targeted.
