Spreading the Light of Knowledge: Punjab’s ‘Digital Library Mission’ Ushers in a New Dawn for Rural Education

Punjab Desk: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, a new wave of education and awareness is rising across rural Punjab. The government has launched the “Digital Library Mission,” under which modern, fully equipped libraries are being established in every assembly constituency.

This initiative is inspiring the youth to move away from drugs and focus on education and employment. The mission was launched on 15 August 2024 from village Koisdu (Khanna). So far, 275 rural libraries have been completed, while construction of 58 more is underway.

Each constituency is being allotted six libraries, with an expenditure of ₹64 lakh per library. These digital libraries feature Wi-Fi, solar power, e-learning systems, and a comfortable reading environment. They are equipped with books on literature, science, history, and competitive exam preparation. Harkeerat Kaur from Barnala says, “Our village finally has a peaceful and motivating space to study.

We have both books and internet access here.” More than just reading spaces, these libraries are emerging as “centers of knowledge,” symbolizing a social renaissance in rural Punjab. Chief Minister Mann said, “This mission is an effort to free our villages from drugs and guide them toward knowledge and employment. Our aim is to take education to the roots of every village.
