Punjab Desk: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab’s farmers are rewriting history. Farmer-friendly schemes and the promotion of modern agricultural technologies have transformed farming in the state. Today, even young engineers are leaving high-paying jobs to take up agriculture as their primary profession. By adopting advanced techniques such as polyhouse farming, many are earning impressive profits of ₹12–14 lakh per season.
This is not just the story of one farmer it is the story of a rising agricultural revolution in Rangla Punjab. Following the directions of Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat, the Horticulture Department is actively promoting crop diversification and helping farmers increase their income.
Benefiting from government schemes, Harbir Singh from Sarabha village in Ludhiana district has become a successful polyhouse farmer and an inspiration for others. According to Horticulture Director Shailendra Kaur, Harbir, who holds a degree in electrical engineering, chose farming over a corporate job. By combining traditional farming with modern techniques, he has set new benchmarks in innovative agriculture. Harbir Singh shared that the Horticulture Department provided him with complete training and knowledge related to polyhouse farming.
Today, he cultivates seedless cucumbers, coloured capsicum, melons, potatoes and fenugreek under polyhouses. His modern farming approach earns him an average profit of ₹12–14 lakh. Back in 2014, Harbir shifted from traditional vegetable farming after receiving training from the Centre of Excellence for Vegetables in Kartarpur. Through the National Horticulture Mission, he availed a government subsidy to set up a polyhouse and began cultivating coloured capsicum and seedless cucumbers.
Harbir says that whenever challenges arose, he regularly consulted Horticulture Department officials. According to him, hard work, dedication, problem-solving ability, and continuous guidance from officials were the key to his success. The Punjab government’s pro-farmer schemes are proving to be a boon. Farmers like Harbir Singh demonstrate that with the right technology, commitment and government support under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the path to prosperity for Punjab’s farming community is wide open.
