Seven decades after independence, Kashmir is poised to embark on a new path of development. Following the commencement of train operations on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) in June last year, Northern Railway has now embarked on a major expansion of connectivity in the valley. Final location surveys have been initiated for four new critical rail lines.
The proposed expansions include the Baramulla-Uri, Sopore-Kupwara, Anantnag-Bijbehara-Pahalgam, and Kakapora-Shopian rail routes. The construction of these lines will not only boost tourism but also facilitate rail access to border areas like Kupwara and Uri.
Since June last year, the railway has emerged as a reliable lifeline for the valley. During the harsh winter, when other routes were closed due to snowfall, the railway provided a strong connectivity option. When the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was affected due to rain and landslides, the railways acted as a lifesaver, saving Kashmir’s apples from spoilage and safely transporting them to various markets across the country. This rail network has also played a role in the supply of food grains, essential cargo consignments, and the transportation of cattle by the Animal Husbandry Department.
Compensation will be provided as soon as the project receives final approval.
The central government is now planning to expand another extensive railway network in Kashmir. The blueprint for the expansion of four new and crucial rail lines has been prepared. According to an official, the alignment (route) of these proposed lines has been finalized in consultation with the respective district administrations. The assessment of the land required for these projects has also been completed. Once the project receives final approval, compensation will be provided to those affected under the laws governing the acquisition of land, trees, and existing structures.
Military access to the LoC will be easier.
This expansion will prove to be a game-changer not only for the common people, farmers, and tourism, but also from a national security perspective. With the construction of lines like the Baramulla-Uri line, Indian Railways will have direct access to the Line of Control (LoC). Railways are also expanding their infrastructure in Kashmir and the Jammu region. The opening of the proposed Jammu-Rajouri rail line will ensure train access to the LoC in the Jammu region as well. This will significantly improve border connectivity throughout the region.
