Navi Mumbai: The Women’s ODI World Cup final between India and South Africa at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy has been delayed due to rain, with the toss now expected at 3:00 PM and play scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM.
Rain Disrupts Pre-Match Preparations
A drizzle that began around noon forced the ground staff to cover the pitch and outfield, while players remained in their dugouts and skipped their warm-up routines.
Around 2:00 PM, just half an hour before the scheduled toss, the rain eased and the sun appeared briefly, drawing cheers from the crowd as ground staff began removing covers for umpire inspection.
However, a few wet patches and puddles remained beyond the inner circle.
Players soon came out for warm-ups, while staff worked quickly to prepare the field for play.
Fans Undeterred by Rain
Despite intermittent rain since early morning across Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Mumbai, thousands of fans gathered outside the stadium, undeterred by the weather.
The atmosphere was electric, with supporters waving flags and chanting for India, who are playing a World Cup final at home for the first time.
Historic Final: India vs. South Africa
Both India and South Africa are chasing their first-ever Women’s World Cup title. India, playing their third final (after 2005 and 2017), are buoyed by home advantage and momentum following their semifinal victory over Australia.
South Africa, meanwhile, are appearing in their first final, hoping to script history in Navi Mumbai.
Ticket Frenzy and Record Crowd Expected
Excitement for the final has led to an unprecedented demand for tickets, and the DY Patil Stadium is expected to set a new attendance record for women’s cricket in India.
“The rain hasn’t dampened the spirit of the fans. We’re ready to cheer until the last ball,” said an enthusiastic spectator outside the venue.
Reserve Day Available
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed a reserve day for the final. If the match cannot be completed on Sunday, play will resume from the same point on Monday.
However, officials remain optimistic that the entire match will be completed today, even if it means a shortened or reduced-overs contest.
“We’ll do everything possible to finish the match today,” an ICC spokesperson said.
