New Delhi: Amarinder Singh Raja Warring resigned as President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) on Friday. He met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi and personally submitted his resignation. Warring said he had a frank and detailed discussion with Rahul Gandhi about the current political situation in Punjab and the challenges facing the Congress ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Warding clarified that he was not forced to resign. He said, “I was not asked to resign.”
‘Submitted my resignation to the one who appointed me’
Warding said that he submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi because he was the one who appointed him as Punjab Congress President. He said that he did not obtain this position through anyone’s favor.
Warring, who will assume the responsibility of Punjab Congress President in April 2022, said that reaching the top post is an achievement, but no one can remain at the top forever.
Warring also spoke on his relationship with Rahul Gandhi
Regarding his relationship with the Congress leadership, Warring said that he makes decisions based on his own discretion and has already expressed his views on Punjab-related issues to Rahul Gandhi.
He said that whatever opportunities and support he received in the Congress party came from Rahul Gandhi, not from anyone else.
Channi Disagrees with Campaign Committee Responsibility
On July 1, the Congress high command decided to retain Warring as Punjab Congress President, while former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was given the reins of the Election Campaign Committee.
However, this arrangement was not acceptable to all leaders within the party. According to reports, Channi was not satisfied with it. Congress Legislature Party leader Pratap Singh Bajwa was also reported to be unhappy with this arrangement.
Several names are being discussed for the new state president
The names of several senior leaders have been discussed for the new president of the Punjab Congress. According to sources, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has supported Channi.
Former minister Vijay Inder Singla has also been considered a potential contender for the state president’s post. Singla, seen as a prominent Hindu face, was also in the news in June-July, but the party decided to retain Warring as state president at that time.
