Hyderabad: Sandhya Reddy, a law graduate from Telangana, has been elected as the Mayor of Sydney’s Strathfield municipality, becoming the 73rd Mayor of the Strathfield Council.
Reddy, also known as Sandy Reddy, was elected on Tuesday and will serve as mayor for a two-year term.
Hailing from Mellareddygudem village in Vikarabad district, Reddy studied at Osmania University and Stanley College in Hyderabad before moving to Australia in 1991.
She later began practising as an immigration lawyer and became involved in social and political affairs in Australia.
Sandhya Reddy’s Political Journey in Strathfield
Reddy was first elected as a Strathfield councillor in December 2021. In September 2023, she was elected Deputy Mayor, becoming the first Indian woman to hold the position.
She retained her council seat in September 2025 and continued as a councillor until her election as mayor.
After being elected Mayor, Reddy told Australian media that it was an honour and said she was pleased to have the opportunity to serve the Strathfield local government area.
According to a report by The Australia Today, Reddy holds a Bachelor of Law, a Master of Anthropology and a Graduate Certificate in Migration Law from the Australian National University.
She has also operated an education and migration services practice while raising her family in Strathfield.
Strathfield’s Diverse Community
Strathfield is located in Sydney’s inner west and is regarded as one of the city’s most culturally diverse local government areas.
The municipality covers around 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of approximately 46,000.
K. T. Rama Rao Congratulates Sandhya Reddy
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K. T. Rama Rao congratulated Sandhya Reddy on her election as Mayor of Strathfield.
In a post on X, Rama Rao described Reddy as a Telangana native and congratulated her on her new role, wishing her success in public service.
He also said Reddy holds the distinction of being the first person from India to be elected as a mayor in Australia.
Reddy’s election marks another milestone in her public and professional journey, which began in Telangana before she moved to Australia and became involved in community and local government affairs.
