The upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat, starring Manoj Bajpayee and directed by Neeraj Pandey, has become embroiled in a heated controversy over its title, with singer‑rapper Santy Sharma publicly criticizing it as “disrespectful” and hurtful to community sentiments. The debate has ignited nationwide discussion about cultural sensitivity and representation in Indian cinema.
Santy Sharma Voices Strong Objection
Santy Sharma took to social media to condemn the film’s title, saying it appears offensive and strikes at the dignity of a respected community. He described the combination of the word “Ghooskhor” (a slang term often associated with corruption or bribery) with “Pandat” (a colloquial variation of the word Pandit, a respected social identity) as insensitive and disrespectful.
Sharma, who identifies as Brahmin by birth, said the title fails to consider how such terminology may be perceived by millions of viewers, and called upon filmmakers to be more thoughtful in their choices to avoid hurting public sentiments.
Wider Backlash and Legal Action
Critics argue that the film’s title could unfairly link a caste or community with negative attributes, leading to widespread offence. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the film’s makers in Lucknow over alleged caste insults, and petitions have also been lodged seeking legal intervention.
In some places, protestors have even burnt effigies of Bajpayee and Pandey, demanding a ban on the film’s release unless the title is changed.
Industry Bodies Raise Concerns
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has also raised objections, describing the title as derogatory and warning that such sensational or provocative titles could damage social harmony. FWICE has appealed to producer bodies and streaming platforms to reconsider and avoid registering titles that might offend or divide.
The organisation stated that the film industry carries a responsibility to ensure that titles and content do not incite misunderstanding, hatred, or unrest among different social groups.
Response From Filmmakers and Stars
In light of the backlash, director Neeraj Pandey acknowledged that the title had caused hurt to some viewers. He announced that all promotional material has been taken down temporarily and emphasized that the story is a fictional cop drama that does not target any religion, caste, or community.
Actor Manoj Bajpayee also addressed the controversy, stating that the film is not intended to make any statement about a particular community. He expressed respect for the concerns raised and reiterated the creative vision of the project.
Broader Debate on Sensitivities in Cinema
The Ghooskhor Pandat title row has sparked broader debate about how films handle social identities, caste references, and community sentiments. Several film titles in the past have faced similar scrutiny, with some being altered or re‑titled following public backlash.
Observers say the controversy underscores the need for filmmakers to balance creative freedom with cultural sensitivities, especially in a diverse society where media content can influence public perceptions.
