New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday targeted the Congress party over its poor performance in the recent Legislative Council (MLC) elections held in four states. He specifically mentioned that the elections were conducted using ballot papers, yet the party did not achieve the expected success.
Congress failed to open its account in three states. Counting is currently underway for five seats in Maharashtra, where the party’s position is still unclear.
PM Modi takes a jab at the Congress on social media
Posting on the social media platform ‘X’, Prime Minister Modi wrote, “MLC elections were held for 28 seats in four major states—Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Karnataka.”
He further taunted, “The elections were conducted using ballot papers. Tell me, how many seats did Congress win?”
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when opposition parties are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.
Opposition Rally in Delhi on November 1
The MLC election results assume significance as the India Bloc is preparing to hold a major rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1 to protest alleged vote theft.
However, the date has also drawn opposition from the ruling NDA, traders, and the Sikh community, as it is being linked to the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
BJP also targets Congress and Rahul Gandhi
Earlier on Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also questioned the Congress’s performance in the Legislative Council elections held using ballot papers. The party alleged that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had made false allegations about the country’s electoral process.
In a press conference, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the results of the MLC elections have dealt a blow to the hopes of the Congress party, which has allegedly made false claims against India’s electoral process. He claimed that the Congress party has failed to win any seats so far and has failed to make its presence felt in the elections.
Trivedi said that these elections were conducted using ballot boxes and ballot papers, yet the Congress party failed to strengthen its position.
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi also took a dig at the Congress party
Union Education Minister Prahlad Joshi also took a dig at the Congress party, saying that whether it uses ballot papers or electronic voting machines (EVMs), the Congress party’s results remain the same. He criticized the party’s poor performance so far in the Legislative Council elections.
Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) won the Agra Teachers’ constituency in Uttar Pradesh, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won the Patna Teachers’ constituency in the biennial Bihar Legislative Council elections.
