Manali: Indian trail runner Shashwat Rao created history by setting a new all-time record over the legendary Hamta Pass in Himachal Pradesh, completing the grueling 39-kilometer high-altitude route from Chattru in Lahaul to Manali in just 5 hours and 10 minutes.
The feat was achieved during the inaugural Himalayan Xtreme Trail Running Fest 2026, a race that forms part of the Indian National League and is certified by the International Trail Running Association (ITRA).
Record-Breaking Run Across Hamta Pass
Hamta Pass, situated at an altitude of 4,300 metres, is one of the Himalayas’ most challenging trekking routes and typically takes trekkers four to five days to complete.
Rao’s remarkable run covered the demanding alpine terrain, which includes steep climbs, technical descents, rocky scree and freezing river crossings, in a little over five hours.
The event was organised by the Himalayan Xtreme Sports Association (HXSA) with support from Himachal Tourism, the Kullu District Administration, and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS).
Elite Athletes Compete in Himalayan Challenge
The festival featured 35 elite athletes competing in three categories:
- Hamta Pass Sky Traverse (39 km)
- Chikka Jobri Dash (18 km)
- Manali Vertical Challenge
To ensure participant safety, organisers deployed emergency medical teams from Rapid Tactical and mountain rescue personnel from the Adventure Tour Operators Association (ATOA) Manali across critical sections of the route.
Adding to the event’s success, Natasha Mahar of Manali emerged as the third overall finisher in the main event, becoming the only female athlete to compete in the demanding race.
Organisers described the performances as a milestone for Indian trail running, saying the event demonstrated the country’s ability to host world-class skyrunning competitions safely in the Himalayas.
