Asian Para Games 2026: Sheetal Devi, Toman Kumar Win Gold

Nagoya, Japan: India’s Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar won gold in the compound mixed team event at the Asian Para Games 2026 on Thursday, defeating Indonesia 151-148. Their victory gave India its first archery gold of the ongoing Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

The Indian pair, who are also world bronze medallists, held their nerve in the final to finish ahead of their Indonesian opponents. The win added another major achievement to India’s campaign and took Sheetal’s medal tally at the Games to two.

She had earlier won silver in the women’s compound doubles event alongside Payal Nag.

Sheetal Devi Sets Records in Qualification

Sheetal has been in impressive form throughout the competition. The 18-year-old scored 704 out of a possible 720 points in the women’s compound qualification round, equalling the world record held by Türkiye’s Oznur Cure Girdi.

The score also improved Sheetal’s own Asian record of 698, set in Bangkok in March, and raised the Asian Para Games record from 680 to 704.

She then joined Toman Kumar for the mixed team qualification round. Together, they scored 1,402 points, breaking the previous world record of 1,400, which had also been set by India.

The performances in qualification set the stage for the pair’s gold-medal-winning effort. Their result in the final further strengthened India’s position in para archery at the Games.

A Remarkable Rise for Sheetal and Toman

Sheetal, who competes in the compound category, has already built an impressive record at a young age. She won gold in the women’s compound individual event at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and later claimed bronze at the Paris Paralympics in 2024.

At the ongoing Games, she also teamed up with Payal Nag in the women’s compound doubles qualification. Their combined score of 1,379 set new Asian and Asian Para Games records, surpassing the previous Asian mark of 1,378. Payal contributed 675 points as the Indian pair finished at the top of the ranking.

Toman is also an established name in international para archery. He is a world champion in the men’s compound individual category and holds the world No. 1 ranking in his classification.

Their mixed team gold is another significant result for the Indian duo, whose performances in Nagoya have underlined their standing among the leading names in the sport.
