In Chandigarh, a total of 95 liquor licenses were allotted in the draw conducted by the Excise Department for the 2024-25 financial year. Of these, 16 liquor shops have been sealed by the Chandigarh Excise Department as of December 19, 2025. Currently, 16 liquor shops remain closed in the city.
According to the Excise Department, the owners of 15 of these liquor shops failed to deposit the required amount with the department on time, leading to the sealing of their shops. One liquor shop in Sector 22C was sealed for allegedly selling liquor at discounted prices.
Action will continue
Excise and Taxation Officer Arun Kumar stated that they had been receiving complaints for several days that a liquor shop in Sector 22C was selling liquor at reduced prices. Following this, he sent his team undercover for verification. The allegations were found to be true, after which the liquor shop was sealed.
The Excise Department stated that action will also be taken against anyone found promoting liquor sales on social media.
