Disappointment for Vinesh Phogat as CAS rejects silver medal appeal

Paris: Vinesh Phogat will not get the silver medal in the Paris Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) rejected her appeal on Wednesday, 14 August. Phogat was disqualified for being overweight before the final. After this she appealed to CAS.

The decision on the appeal was to be taken on August 16, but her appeal was rejected on August 14 itself. After the decision, Indian Olympic Committee President PT Usha expressed displeasure.

Vinesh had made it to the final by winning 3 consecutive matches in the 50 kg women’s category of wrestling. The final was to be held on August 8, but before the match, the Olympic Committee disqualified the wrestler as Vinesh’s weight was 100 grams more than 50 kg.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed displeasure over the CAS result. He said that he was shocked by the decision of United World Wrestling (UWW) and International Olympic Committee (IOC).

After Vinesh’s appeal, CAS held a 3-hour hearing on August 9. Vinesh was also present virtually during this time. Senior advocate Harish Salve presented Vinesh’s side on behalf of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Before the final match, Vinesh was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight, while in the weight taken before the preliminary round, Vinesh was below the prescribed limit of 50 kg weight category. In such a situation, Vinesh had demanded a joint silver medal.
