Gautam Gambhir becomes head coach of Team India

Mumbai: Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of Team India. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced Gautam’s appointment as the head coach on Tuesday. He informed me about this through an X post.

42-year-old Gambhir will replace Rahul Dravid, popularly known as The Wall. Dravid’s tenure ended after the T20 World Cup.

Gambhir made the Kolkata Knight Riders the champions of IPL-2024 a month and a half ago. He became the mentor of the Kolkata franchise this year. Not only this, Gambhir led the Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs for two consecutive seasons during his mentorship.

42-year-old Gambhir has no coaching experience at the international or domestic level; he has been in charge of the coaching staff in two IPL franchises. He was the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023, while he joined KKR in the 2024 season. Gambhir led the team to the playoffs in the first two seasons while at LSG. At the same time, he made KKR the champion this season.

As a player, Gambhir was part of India’s T20 World Cup win in 2007 and the ODI World Cup win in 2011. He captained KKR for seven IPL seasons from 2011 to 2017, and he also qualified for the playoffs five times. As captain, he won two titles in 2012 and 2014.
