Hockey India has announced a revamped 18-member squad for the 2024 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, set to take place from November 11 to 20 at the newly-built Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar. As the defending champions, the Indian women’s team enters the tournament with high hopes after winning the title last year in Ranchi. They will compete against five other nations: reigning Olympic silver medalists China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The team will be led by captain Salima Tete, with Navneet Kaur serving as vice-captain. Goalkeeping responsibilities will be shared between experienced player Savita and emerging talent Bichu Devi Kharibam. The defense features a strong lineup, including Udita, Jyoti, Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke.
In midfield, Salima Tete will be supported by Neha, Sharmila Devi, Manisha Chauhan, Sunelita Toppo, and Lalremsiami, all known for their dynamic play. The forward line presents significant attacking strength with Navneet Kaur, Sangita Kumari, Deepika, Preeti Dubey, and Beauty Dungdung.
Notably, Sushila and Beauty Dungdung are returning to the squad after completing their rehabilitation.
Discussing the team’s preparation and selection, Salima Tete expressed her excitement about leading the team again, especially as defending champions. She highlighted the rigorous training and the mix of experienced players and young talent in the squad, emphasizing their aim to defend their title with passion and determination.
Vice-captain Navneet Kaur added that the team is confident in their preparation and the chemistry they’ve developed, noting the advantage of playing in front of a home crowd and their readiness to face tough competition from top Asian teams. They are determined to make this tournament memorable.
