Jos Buttler quits England captaincy: Decision taken after poor performance in Champions Trophy

Mumbai: England’s Jos Buttler has given up captaincy of the team in ODI and T20 formats. Buttler took this decision after the team’s poor performance in the Champions Trophy. He will lead the team for the last time in the group stage match against South Africa in Karachi on Saturday.

Butler spoke about leaving the captaincy in a press conference on Friday before the match. England’s team was eliminated in the group stage in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Butler said – this is the right time to leave captaincy

In the press conference, Butler said, ‘This is the right time for me to leave captaincy, this is the right time for the team as well. I hope that a new player will take charge of the team and take the team to new heights along with coach McCullum. The results of the Champions Trophy were very important for my captaincy.

When McCullum became the white ball coach, I was very excited to work with him. I hoped that the team would change its results and move forward rapidly. However, this did not happen, so I am leaving the captaincy.

Butler had said – a lot of work is needed on the game

Jos Butler had said after losing the match to Afghanistan, ‘I think the team did not get the results we wanted. That’s why I had to consider the decision of captaincy. England cricket needs to think a lot in both formats of white ball. I have to work a lot on my game. I have to understand whether I am part of the problem or the solution?’

England lost to Australia-Afghanistan

In the Champions Trophy, England was defeated by Australia in the very first match. The team could not defend 351 runs. Then the team could not chase the target of 326 runs against Afghanistan. After 2 defeats, the team could not qualify for the semi-finals.

England also lost the series against India

Before the Champions Trophy, England had also lost the T20 and ODI series in India. India won the 5 T20 series 4-1 and the 3 ODI series 3-0. Under Butler’s captaincy, the team lost 7 consecutive matches.
