New Delhi: Mumbai Indians have won the Women’s Premier League (WPL) title for the second time in 3 years. The team defeated Delhi Capitals by 8 runs in the final on Saturday. Delhi remained runner-up for the third consecutive time. Mumbai scored 149 runs after losing 7 wickets at the Brabourne Stadium. Delhi’s team could score only 141 runs.
Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored a fifty on a crucial occasion. She also shared an important partnership of 89 runs with Natalie Siver Brunt. Siver Brunt took 3 wickets in bowling and helped her team make a comeback.
Delhi Capitals also had a bad start
while chasing the target of 150 runs. The team lost 2 wickets for 17 runs. The team lost 5 wickets for 66 runs. Captain Meg Lanning got out after scoring 13 runs, Shefali Verma for 4 runs, Jess Jonassen for 13 runs and Annabel Sutherland for 2 runs.
Kapp, Jemima showed fight
Jemima Rodriguez showed fight and tried to make the team win, but she was out after scoring 30 runs. After her, Sarah Bryce 5, Minnu Mani 4 and Shikha Pandey were out without opening the account. Marizanne Kapp hit 5 fours and 2 sixes, but she too returned to the pavilion after scoring 40 runs.
Nikki Prasad tried to lead the team to victory in the end, but her efforts failed. The team could only score 141 runs after losing 9 wickets. From Mumbai, Nat Siver-Brunt took 3 wickets and Amelia Kerr took 2 wickets. Shabnim Ismail, Hayley Matthews and Saiqa Ishak got 1-1 wickets.
Mumbai players dominate the leaderboard
Mumbai’s batsmen and bowlers also dominated the leaderboard. Natalie Siver Brunt was the top scorer with 523 runs in 10 matches, she also completed 1000 runs in the tournament history. Mumbai’s Hayley Matthews was third with 307 runs and captain Harmanpreet Kaur was fifth with 302 runs.
Among the bowlers, Amelia Kerr and Hayley Matthews were the top wicket takers. Both Mumbai spinners took 18 wickets each. Nat Siver Brunt was at the fifth position with 12 wickets. Jess Jonassen took 13 wickets for Delhi. Shefali Verma was the top scorer for Delhi Capitals by scoring 304 runs.
Mumbai won the second title
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) started in 2023. Even then Mumbai won the title by defeating Delhi in the final. Royal Challengers Bangalore won the title in the second season. Now Mumbai has won the second title in the third season. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals topped the points table in all three seasons, but the team remained runner-up all three times.
