Jalandhar: Punjab Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian today attended the semi-finals of the 41th edition of Olympian Surjeet Hockey Tournament at Burlton Park, Jalandhar. In the first match, Bharat Petroleum triumphed over Indian Railways, while the second match saw romantic competition between Indian Oil and Punjab & Sindh Bank teams.
Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, the Minister expressed pride in making his first official visit to Jalandhar, the “sports city,” during a high-profile sports event. He affirmed the Punjab Government’s dedication under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to restore the state’s legacy in sports. Highlighting the success of recent initiatives like the Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan, he noted the overwhelming public participation and the government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for aspiring athletes.
Mr. Mundian also emphasized that medal-winning athletes at national and international levels are now receiving substantial recognition, including senior-level government positions, reflecting the revamped state sports policy.
Applauding the Olympian Surjit Hockey Society’s efforts, he commended the annual tournament held in memory of Surjit Singh Randhawa, the former skipper on Indian hockey team. He assured the government’s full support to the academy and the society to further promote hockey and foster sports culture in the region. Among others present were Chairman Punjab Agri Export Corporation Limited Mangal Singh, senior AAP leader Rajwinder Kaur Thiara, and Hony. Secretary Olympian Surjit Hockey Society Ranbir Singh Tutt, besides others.
Earlier, the Minister also had a interaction with the team members of both the competing teams during half time and praised them for showing sports spirit during the match. He also honoured a few hockey coaches for providing hockey training to budding players.
