New York: Spain’s star tennis player Carlos Alcaraz was eliminated after losing in the second round of the US Open. Botic van de Zandschulp defeated world number 3, Alcaraz, ranked 74th in the world rankings, in the second round of the men’s singles on Friday.
Netherlands’ Zandschulp defeated four-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 19 minutes on the center court of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
At the same time, former number-1 Naomi Osaka of Japan was eliminated after losing in the second round of women’s singles. She was defeated by Czech Karolina Muchova 6-3, 7-6. Osaka has struggled to regain her rhythm in her return to the court. She defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the opening round. This was her first win over a top-10 player for the first time in four years.
2022 was Alcaraz’s year. He entered the Australian Open for the first time with a 31st seed. He lost in the third round, but won four ATP titles including Miami, Madrid, Rio and Conde Godo Open. In the US Open final this year, he defeated world number-5 Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3 and won his first Grand Slam.
He ended the year as world number-1 and continued the same form in 2023 and also won the Wimbledon final. Alcaraz won the French Open title this year by defeating Alexander Zverev. Apart from this, he also won the silver medal in the Paris Olympics.
