New Delhi: Sri Lanka has announced a 15-member squad for the two-Test series against Pakistan in November. Kusal Mendis has been named captain after Dhananjaya de Silva stepped down as captain. Uncapped batsman Anjala Bandara has earned her first call-up to the Sri Lankan Test squad.
The selectors have also included opener Pathum Nissanka in the squad, but his availability for the first Test will depend on fitness. This series is considered crucial for Sri Lanka in terms of the World Test Championship (WTC).
Test series to begin on November 9
The first match of the two-Test series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be played in Rawalpindi on November 9. The two teams will then travel to Lahore for the second Test, which will begin on November 17.
Pathum Nissanka’s fitness under scrutiny
Pathum Nissanka’s fitness remains a key issue for Sri Lanka. He has been included in the squad, but a decision on his participation in the first Test will be made based on his physical condition.
No reserve opener has been included in the squad. However, Anjala Bandara, who bats at number three for Colombo Cricket Club, could be given the responsibility of opening the innings if needed. Clarification regarding Nissanka’s availability is expected as the Rawalpindi Test approaches.
This is Bandara’s first Test call-up. He has scored 2,239 runs in 31 first-class matches. This will give him a chance to showcase his talent for the national team.
Dhananjaya de Silva also included
Former captain Dhananjaya de Silva has also been included in the 15-member squad. Despite relinquishing the captaincy, he remains an important part of Sri Lanka’s Test team.
Given the conditions in Pakistan, the role of spin bowlers could also be crucial. The team will have high expectations from Sri Lankan spinner Prabhath Jayasuriya.
