Chandigarh: Sukhbir Singh Badal is expected to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) today in connection with the investigation into the 2015 sacrilege incidents and the subsequent police firing at Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura in Punjab.
The questioning forms part of the SIT’s continuing probe into the events surrounding the alleged desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib and the police action against protesters that followed.
The SIT had served a notice to the SAD chief last week, asking him to join the investigation after seeking clarification on matters linked to the case.
Investigation focuses on decisions taken during Akali government
The probe is examining the sequence of events surrounding the 2015 sacrilege incidents, including administrative and policing decisions taken during the then Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government.
Investigators are expected to question Badal regarding issues related to the handling of the incidents and subsequent developments, as part of the ongoing investigation.
The sacrilege incidents and the police firing at Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura remain among Punjab’s most sensitive political and legal matters, with multiple investigations and court proceedings continuing over the past decade.
No official questioning time announced
While Sukhbir Badal is scheduled to appear before the SIT on July 20, the Punjab Police has not officially disclosed the time of the questioning.
The appearance comes as the SIT continues to record statements and gather evidence in an effort to complete its investigation into the sacrilege and police firing cases.
