Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party has reportedly suspended its Punjab MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana after he raised questions over the shortage of teachers in government schools and concerns related to the state’s education system.
Maiserkhana, who represents the Maur Assembly constituency in Bathinda, has been vocal about issues concerning government schools. He has also attracted attention for sending his own children to government schools.
The reported action comes amid continuing discussion over vacancies and staffing gaps in Punjab’s government schools. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has acknowledged that teacher shortages remain a challenge, while saying the government has accelerated recruitment and that more than 14,000 teachers have been recruited over the past four years.
Maiserkhana’s concerns over government schools
Maiserkhana has previously spoken about the need to strengthen government schools and has publicly highlighted issues affecting the education system.
In March 2026, The Indian Express reported that he was the only Punjab MLA with school-going children whose children were studying in government schools during the 2025-26 academic session.
The reported suspension has now brought renewed attention to the differences surrounding the functioning of government schools and the availability of teachers in the state.
Further details about the suspension and the party’s official reasons are awaited.
