New Delhi: The Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team is set to perform a special aerial display over the historic Somnath Temple on Monday as part of the temple’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

The event, scheduled for 11 a.m., will feature six Hawk Mk-132 aircraft performing synchronised aerobatic formations over the temple complex in Prabhas Patan.

Part of Somnath Amritparva Celebrations

The air show is a major attraction of the ‘Somnath Amritparva-2026’ celebrations being organised at the revered first Jyotirlinga shrine. The display is expected to combine spiritual heritage with the precision and skill of the Indian Air Force.

Officials said the performance will take place in the presence of the Prime Minister and senior dignitaries.

Precision Flying and Aerobatic Manoeuvres

Known as the “Ambassadors of the Indian Air Force,” the Surya Kiran team will showcase close-formation flying and complex aerial manoeuvres demonstrating discipline, teamwork, and pilot expertise.

The aircraft are expected to fly at speeds between 800 and 900 kmph during the performance. The display sequence will begin with all six jets taking off together before splitting into various formations in the sky.

Globally Recognised Aerobatic Team

Established in 1996, the team operates Hawk Mk-132 aircraft manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The aerobatic squad has performed more than 800 shows across India and abroad, including in China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, and the UAE.

The team is led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, while Wing Commander Tejeshwar Singh serves as Deputy Leader.

Tricolour Smoke Trails to Light Up the Sky

The Hawk aircraft have recently been equipped with indigenous coloured smoke pods developed at the Air Force’s Nashik base. During the performance, the jets may release saffron, white, and green smoke trails representing the Indian national flag.

Special Safety Measures in Place

Authorities have implemented extensive safety arrangements for the event, including bird hazard control measures near the flight zone. Residents were advised not to discard food waste in open areas to minimise bird movement during the aerial display.

Ground coordination teams will also monitor wind conditions and aircraft safety throughout the event to ensure smooth operations.
