Patna: RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has demanded Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary’s resignation over the alleged harassment of two minor students in Jamui, saying the incident raises serious concerns about the safety of women and girls in the state.
Yadav also referred to an earlier statement by Choudhary in which the Chief Minister had said he was ready to resign if anyone was harmed in Munger. Yadav challenged Choudhary to stand by those remarks and step down.
Tejashwi Yadav Attacks Bihar Government Over Jamui Case
Reacting to the viral video linked to the Jamui incident, Yadav said it showed that women and girls were not safe in Bihar. He alleged that crimes against women and girls were increasing and criticised the state government over its handling of the matter.
Yadav said Choudhary had earlier stated that he would resign if someone was harmed in Munger. Referring to that statement, the RJD leader said the Chief Minister should now resign if he stood by his earlier words.
He also criticised members of the ruling alliance, alleging that some were trying to justify the incident.
Yadav’s remarks are part of a wider political dispute in Bihar following the circulation of the video, with Opposition leaders questioning the government over law and order, while members of the ruling alliance have defended the administration’s response.
What Happened In The Jamui Incident?
The political reaction followed the circulation of a video allegedly showing a group of people harassing two minor students in Jamui.
According to police, the incident took place on September 19 after the two students had attended coaching classes and were returning on a two-wheeler. Police subsequently identified the victims and recorded their statements.
An FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A Special Investigation Team headed by SDPO Deepti Monali was formed to investigate the case and trace the remaining suspects.
Police said around seven people were identified from the video. Three accused had initially been arrested, while efforts continued to locate the others.
Main Accused Nandan Yadav Injured In Police Encounter
In the latest development on Tuesday, police said alleged prime accused Nandan Yadav was injured in the leg during an encounter while being taken towards the scene of the incident. He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.
Reports said Yadav was arrested along with another accused following the encounter, taking the total number of arrests to five in the case, although earlier police updates had put the number of arrests at three.
The investigation remains underway, with police continuing efforts to trace the remaining suspects and examine the video evidence.
The case has also triggered action against social media accounts that circulated the footage, with police registering cases against accounts allegedly involved in exposing the identity of the minor victims.
