The Supreme Court of India has shown flexibility in delivering a just decision by canceling the bail of former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case in Uttar Pradesh, holding him accountable for his inhumane act. The bail decision had been granted by the Delhi High Court. This incident dates back to 2017 in the Unnao region of Uttar Pradesh.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar was the MLA from Unnao at that time. Not only did he rape an innocent girl, but other incidents also occurred that suggested that powerful people can do anything to achieve their goals. The victim, along with her father, pleaded for justice in the court premises.
The powerful man first tried to bribe them and instill fear of social stigma. When that failed, he framed the victim’s father in some cases and had him detained.
He was beaten up, which led to his death. The victim’s family continued to receive threats.An attempt was made to kill her lawyer in an accident.
The victim and her lawyer were seriously injured in the accident, and two relatives died.This was the extent of the powerful man’s influence, but now the Indian judiciary, overturning the Delhi High Court’s decision, has ordered him to remain in jail. Sengar had obtained bail from the Delhi High Court on December 23, 2025.
He argued that he was a public servant and had already served five years of his sentence in this case. The victim’s fear was unending because the powerful man had been released. There was a nationwide reaction against this, as the country was outraged by what had happened in the Unnao case. While judicial decisions are usually considered final and unchallengeable, in this case, the Supreme Court stayed the decision to suspend the sentence of a powerful man. With the belief that the voice of the common man will not go unheard in India, that it will be listened to, and that efforts will be made to deliver justice to the victims, we are about to welcome the new year.
