JALANDHAR/PUNJAB, INDIA — Security agencies in Punjab have launched a serious probe after a threatening email was received ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar on Sunday, February 1, 2026, to mark Guru Ravidas Jayanti. Authorities are treating the warning with heightened alert given the high‑profile nature of the visit and the emotional significance of the religious occasion.

Threat Email Sparks Security Alert

On Saturday, January 31, 2026, local officials received an anonymous email that referenced possible threats to Dera Ballan and warned of potential disruption at several schools in Jalandhar. The message reportedly mentioned three to four schools, raising concerns that the threats were linked to the Prime Minister’s visit. Although no hazardous material has been found so far, police and intelligence units are investigating the origin and authenticity of the communications.

One version of the email quoted in media reports included political rhetoric, stating that while the sender had “respect” for Guru Ravidas and the head of the Dera, they viewed Prime Minister Modi as an “enemy” and alluded to grievances connected with the shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. Authorities have not confirmed whether these statements reflect the threat’s true source or motivation, but they are taking all such messaging seriously within the security review.

Heightened Security Preparations

In response, Punjab Police and security agencies have tightened precautionary measures across Jalandhar district, especially around Dera Sachkhand Ballan, the route from Adampur airport and other sensitive locations. Hundreds of additional personnel, including Special Protection Group (SPG) teams, have been deployed to ensure safety during the Prime Minister’s visit, and authorities are conducting thorough surveillance of schools and public places mentioned in the emails.

All schools in Jalandhar were already closed on Saturday due to the public holiday for Guru Ravidas Jayanti and the accompanying Shobha Yatra, and officials have stressed that students’ safety is not currently at risk. Security agencies are also examining the emails with cyber intelligence support to trace whether the threatening messages came from domestic or foreign sources.

PM Modi’s Itinerary and Visit Plans

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in Jalandhar on February 1, 2026, ahead of his programme at Dera Sachkhand Ballan later in the day. The visit holds deep religious and political significance among the Ravidassia community, with celebrations of Guru Ravidas’s 649th birth anniversary planned at the site. Authorities remain focused on ensuring that the visit proceeds without incident, underscoring the government’s commitment to safe and orderly public events.
