Washington, November 1: Former US President Donald Trump on Friday described Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’, alleging that Christianity there is facing an existential threat.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump cited the ongoing religious violence between Muslim and Christian communities and accused “radical Islamists” of committing “mass murder” against the Christian minority.

“Christianity in Nigeria is facing an existential threat. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass murder. I am thus making Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern,'” Trump said in his post.
He added that Congressman Riley Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole have been asked to investigate the situation and report back to him.
Demand for US action on religious persecution
Trump insisted that the United States should not remain silent in the face of atrocities against Christians and other persecuted groups.
“We are ready, willing and able to protect our great Christian population around the world,” he said.
Violence against Christians in Nigeria
Trump’s comments came amid ongoing reports of religious violence in Nigeria, particularly in the northern and central regions of the country.
In June 2025, at least 20 people were killed in a terrorist attack on the hometown of a Nigerian bishop – just days after he testified before the US Congress about the persecution of Christians, according to Fox News.
US diplomats urge more pressure on Nigeria
Mark Walker, Trump’s ambassador-designate for international religious freedom, told Fox News that the US should increase pressure on the Nigerian government to stop the escalating violence.
“The Nigerian government must take strong action to protect its Christian citizens. The US can no longer ignore these atrocities,” Walker said.
