Washington: US President Donald Trump has once again renewed his push for the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming that he has helped settle eight wars and arguing that his efforts deserve recognition from the prestigious award committee.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump was asked about the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, which is scheduled to be announced on October 9. He said he did not know what decision the Norwegian Nobel Committee would take but suggested that the committee may not favour him.
“I don’t know what their decision is going to be,” Trump said, adding that the committee had “a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me.”
Trump also referred to the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado last year. Machado presented her Nobel medal to Trump during a White House visit in January, saying he deserved the award for his efforts. Trump described the gesture as a great honour.
Trump claims he settled eight wars
Trump repeated his claim that he had helped settle eight wars since returning to the White House and said he had achieved things that, in his view, no other US president had accomplished.
“I settled eight wars,” Trump said, while also claiming that his efforts had saved millions of lives.
He further said that he had helped prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and described that as one of his significant achievements.
Trump has repeatedly cited his role in several international conflicts while making the case for a Nobel Peace Prize. However, some of the conflicts he describes as settled remain disputed or have seen violence resume, and his claims about the extent of his role have been challenged.
Trump takes aim at Barack Obama
Trump also criticised former US President Barack Obama while discussing the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Obama got it, and he didn’t do anything,” Trump said, questioning why Obama received the award.
Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Nobel Committee made the award in October 2009, during the first year of his presidency.
Trump said that, regardless of whether he receives the 2026 award, he believes his record would merit recognition.
“I don’t know what their decision’s going to be,” Trump said. “But whether I get it or not, I have done far more.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on October 9. The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maria Corina Machado for her work promoting democratic rights in Venezuela and pursuing a peaceful transition to democracy.
