Trump Says Modi Asked “Sir, May I See You Please?” | India-US Relations & Tariffs

At a House GOP Member Retreat,   US President Donald Trump said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi once approached him and said, “Sir, may I see you please.” Trump framed this as part of their personal rapport while speaking about broader diplomatic issues.

According to the remarks, Trump stated they have a “very good relationship,” though he acknowledged tensions over trade.

Strain in India-US Relations Over Tariffs

Trump also addressed rising tensions between Washington and New Delhi, saying that PM Modi was “not that happy with me” because India is paying high tariffs imposed by the US. These levies include punitive duties tied to India’s purchase of Russian oil.

He reiterated that India has reduced its Russian oil imports substantially, but tariff disputes remain a key point of friction.

Apache Helicopter Delivery: Long-Pending Defense Trade

Trump mentioned that India told him it had been waiting for Apache helicopters for about five years. He said steps were being taken to move the process forward, noting India’s order for multiple helicopters.

The remarks highlight how defense procurement is also intertwined with broader strategic ties between the two countries.

Broader Context: US Tariffs & Russian Oil

The tariff issue reflects deeper trade friction between the US and India. Trump’s administration, echoing other reports, has indicated that India’s import of Russian oil has been a sticking point, leading to higher tariffs including a 50% tariff on some Indian goods and a special 25% tariff linked to energy imports.

Despite these tensions, both nations continue diplomatic engagement, given their shared economic and strategic interests.
