Tokyo: US President Donald Trump will embark on a three-day official visit to Japan from October 27 to 29, marking his first meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi since she assumed office.

During the visit, Trump and Takaichi will hold a Japan-US summit, and the former US President will also have an audience with the Emperor of Japan, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

In a statement, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said:

“President Trump’s visit to Japan is an extremely meaningful opportunity to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance, and the Government of Japan wholeheartedly welcomes President Trump’s visit to Japan.”

This will be Trump’s fourth visit to Japan as US President; his previous trip took place in 2019 during his first term.

Strengthening the Japan-US Alliance

Japan’s Foreign Ministry noted that Trump’s visit underscores the continuing strength of the Japan-US alliance, which both nations describe as the cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

In February, Trump met with then-Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Washington, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a “new golden age” of bilateral ties, aimed at upholding a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Their joint statement at the time read:

“The two leaders expressed their shared desire for bilateral security and defence cooperation under the US-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security to grow stronger than ever. Japan reiterated its unwavering commitment to fundamentally reinforce its own defence capabilities, which the United States welcomed.”

In September, Ishiba also attended a reception hosted by Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump, where he conveyed appreciation for Trump’s friendship and reaffirmed that the Japan-US alliance would remain steadfast in promoting global peace and prosperity.
