Wayanad: Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) president N.D. Appachan resigned from his post on Thursday, a move confirmed by Congress’ Kerala president and legislator Sunny Joseph.
Resignation Amid Internal Turmoil
The decision comes at a time when the Wayanad Congress unit is facing a severe internal crisis following the suicides of two senior party leaders, which have left the organisation shaken.
Tensions reportedly grew after a remark by Appachan concerning Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s recent visit to Wayanad, which allegedly upset the party leadership.
Appachan Denies Pressure, Clarifies Stance
Appachan rejected claims that he was forced to quit, stating: “I had myself informed the leadership that I was prepared to step down, and I have done that.”
He distanced himself from the suicides but admitted that he had been indirectly implicated in related issues. On allegations of financial misconduct, he clarified that he had not personally benefited from any financial transactions.
Appachan further accused local factions of deliberately fuelling organisational troubles and spreading false narratives, including suggestions that he prevented Priyanka Gandhi from meeting him.
He explained that he did, in fact, meet her after a KPCC meeting to discuss matters related to a family bereavement. Reaffirming his loyalty, he said he would remain committed to the party “until my last breath.”
Fallout of Senior Leader’s Suicide
The crisis escalated after the death of senior Congress leader N.M. Vijayan, whose daughter-in-law launched a Satyagraha outside the DCC office, demanding clearance of outstanding dues by September 30, with another protest planned for October 2.
The party recently intervened, settling Vijayan’s Urban Bank dues of Rs 58 lakh under an agreement with his family, in addition to earlier payments to a private financial institution.
References to Congress leaders in Vijayan’s suicide note have further deepened the turmoil.
Next Steps and Ongoing Factionalism
Sunny Joseph confirmed that Appachan’s resignation would be forwarded to the party high command.
Factionalism continues to trouble the district unit, with AICC General Secretary and Wayanad MP K.C. Venugopal earlier this month warning local leaders of strict action if organisational discipline was not maintained.
