UP Declares January 15 Holiday for Makar Sankranti

The Yogi Adityanath‑led Uttar Pradesh government has declared January 15, 2026, a public holiday across the state in observance of Makar Sankranti, a major harvest festival widely celebrated in North India. The official order to declare the day a public holiday has been issued by the state administration.

Makar Sankranti, which marks the Sun’s transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara) and ushers in the auspicious Uttarayan period, has cultural and religious significance across the country.

Why 15 January Was Chosen

Traditionally celebrated on January 14 most years, Makar Sankranti’s date can vary due to astronomical calculations, leading to observances on January 15 in certain years. This year, Uttar Pradesh authorities have aligned the holiday with the wider festive mood, even as discussions continue about the exact astronomical timing.

The decision means that schools, government offices, and many institutions will remain closed on the holiday, allowing residents to participate in cultural events, family gatherings, and religious rituals without workday commitments.

Festival Traditions and Significance

Makar Sankranti is observed with vibrant activities from flying kites and preparing traditional foods like til (sesame) sweets and khichdi to taking holy ritual dips in rivers. The festival symbolises the end of winter and the beginning of the sun’s northward journey, believed to bring spiritual merit and prosperity.

In Uttar Pradesh, particularly in cities like Prayagraj (Allahabad), the occasion is also intertwined with ongoing Magh Mela bathing rituals, which attract large numbers of devotees to the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been actively overseeing arrangements for smooth conduct of these festivities.

Impact on Public Life

The public holiday declaration means official closures across the state for workplaces, educational institutions, and many services. Residents are expected to mark the festival with traditional celebrations, community events, and family occasions.

As Makar Sankranti coincides with Uttar Pradesh’s festive calendar this year, the holiday also supports local cultural programmes and gives people an opportunity to observe traditional rituals with family and community.
