New Delhi: Voting for the Vice President will be held tomorrow on Tuesday. The results will be declared by the evening of the same day. With this, the country will get a new Vice President in place of Jagdeep Dhankhar after 50 days. The election is being held due to Dhankhar’s sudden resignation on 21 July.
NDA has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, and the opposition alliance India has nominated retired Supreme Court Justice Sudarshan Reddy. NDA has a clear lead in the numbers. However, due to the strength of the opposition in Parliament, the contest may be close for the first time in the last two decades.
Meanwhile, KCR’s party, BRS, has decided that it will not support any alliance in the Vice Presidential election. However, its official announcement will be made in a day or two. BRS has 4 members in the Rajya Sabha.
Today, BJP MPs will be informed about voting for the post of Vice President in Delhi. At the same time, India Alliance will also conduct a mock poll to explain the voting process to its MPs.
Election schedule: Voting at 10 am, results at 6 pm
Voting will be held on September 9, from 10 am to 5 pm at Parliament House. Counting of votes will begin at 6 pm and results will be declared immediately. Every MP will have to enter the first preference on the ballot with a special pen. If this is not done, the vote will be invalid. The value of every vote will be the same. 11 votes were declared invalid in 2017 and 15 in 2022.
Rules: Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha vote for the post of Vice President.
However, whip cannot be issued for this. If all MPs vote on party lines, NDA candidate Radhakrishnan is expected to have 439 votes and opposition candidate Reddy is expected to have 324 votes. However, cross voting in secret ballot can spoil the equation on both sides. Therefore, full preparations are being made on both sides.
