Thiruvananthapuram: Virat Kohli created history during India’s first ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram, completing 15,000 runs in ODI cricket and breaking a major record held by Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli reached the landmark during his innings against the West Indies, becoming only the second batter in men’s ODI history to cross the 15,000-run mark after Tendulkar.
Kohli Reaches 15,000 ODI Runs
Kohli entered the match needing 59 runs to reach 15,000 ODI runs. He had 14,941 runs from 314 ODIs and 302 innings before the match.
By reaching the milestone, Kohli also surpassed Tendulkar’s record for the fastest 15,000 ODI runs. Tendulkar had reached the mark in 377 innings, while Kohli achieved it in his 303rd ODI innings.
The milestone triggered a standing ovation from the crowd at the Greenfield International Stadium, with Kohli acknowledging the fans after reaching the landmark.
Another Major Record For Kohli
The achievement adds another major milestone to Kohli’s ODI career and places him behind only Tendulkar on the all-time ODI run-scoring list.
Kohli had also entered the West Indies series with several Tendulkar records within reach, including the record for most ODI runs scored at home.
