Jammu and Kashmir: Authorities in Jammu, Udhampur, and Samba districts of the Jammu division have ordered the closure of all schools and cancellation of certain examinations after multiple rivers crossed the flood alert level on Tuesday.

Rivers Cross Danger Threshold

The Tawi River in Udhampur, Basantar in Samba, and Ujh in Kathua have all breached the flood alert mark following continuous rainfall. Officials warned that water levels in several rivers and streams are expected to rise further over the next 48 hours.

Education Activities Halted

The Directorate of School Education, Jammu, announced that all government and private schools in the division will remain shut on September 3 due to inclement weather. The J&K Board of Secondary Education also cancelled Class 10 and 11 examinations scheduled for Wednesday.

Relief Teams on Ground

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed at the Tawi Bridge in Jammu to safeguard the public and urge residents to keep away from riverbanks. Authorities have warned of possible cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.

Weather Forecast and Preparedness

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu division, while the Kashmir Valley is expected to see lighter rainfall. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, said the administration remains on “high alert” for the next 15–30 days and will continue issuing weather advisories.

“As of now, the water level in Jhelum and other water bodies is much below the danger mark,” Labroo said, while urging the public to follow safety guidelines, including avoiding contact with electric poles and cables during gusty winds.
