New Delhi: While shoes serve as protection against environmental elements, medical experts warn that wearing them continuously throughout the day may be detrimental to foot health.
According to orthopaedic specialists, prolonged and improper shoe use can lead to muscle weakness, infections, and even posture-related complications.
Dr. Vikas Basa, Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Kokilaben Hospitals in Mumbai, explained that restricting the feet within closed footwear for extended periods can reduce mobility and strength. “Shoes lock your feet into a fixed position. Over time, this results in weakened muscles and reduced natural flexibility,” Dr. Basa said.
Range of Health Risks Identified
Common foot issues caused by constant shoe use include blisters, corns, and calluses, which result from repetitive friction between the shoe and skin. Dr. Basa noted that ill-fitting footwear significantly raises the risk of these painful conditions.
In hot and humid climates such as India’s, fungal and bacterial infections are another concern. “Trapped moisture inside shoes creates an ideal environment for infections like athlete’s foot,” said Dr. Siddharth Yadav, Orthopaedic Consultant at Apollo Hospitals.
Both experts highlighted the risk of muscle atrophy due to restricted foot movement. Weakened foot muscles can contribute to further complications, including plantar fasciitis and postural imbalance. Improper footwear, particularly those lacking adequate support, can also lead to chronic back, hip, or knee pain, they said.
Recommendations for Prevention and Foot Care
Doctors recommend removing shoes periodically to allow feet to breathe and relax. Dr. Yadav advised incorporating daily foot care routines such as washing, drying, and moisturizing feet, as well as keeping footwear clean and dry.
Additional recommendations include:
- Stretching and strengthening exercises to maintain muscle tone and flexibility.
- Sun-drying shoes regularly to eliminate bacteria and unpleasant odours.
- Wearing appropriately sized and breathable footwear, especially in hot climates.
While the protective function of shoes remains essential, both Dr. Basa and Dr. Yadav emphasized the importance of moderation and mindful use to maintain foot and overall musculoskeletal health.
