Why food choices are becoming a public policy issue

Food has long been considered a matter of personal preference and cultural tradition. However, in recent years, what people eat has increasingly become a subject of public policy debate. Rising health concerns, environmental pressures, and economic inequalities have pushed food choices beyond the private sphere, making them a collective concern.India faces a complex nutritional landscape. Undernutrition persists in many regions, particularly among children and women, while obesity and lifestyle-related diseases are rising in urban areas. This dual burden places strain on the healthcare system and highlights gaps in food access and awareness.

Policy interventions now aim to address both extremes simultaneously.Agricultural practices play a significant role in shaping diets. Government support has historically favoured certain crops, influencing what is widely available and affordable. Rice and wheat dominate public distribution systems, while nutritious alternatives such as millets, pulses, and diverse vegetables have received comparatively less attention. Recent efforts to promote millets reflect a shift towards more sustainable and nutritious food systems. Urbanisation has altered consumption patterns. Processed and packaged foods are increasingly accessible, often marketed aggressively and priced competitively. While convenient, these foods are typically high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Regulating advertising, especially targeting children, has become an area of policy focus in many countries, including India.
