Almora: In a bizarre incident on Saturday, a young man stole a passenger bus from the Dharanaula bus stand in Almora while the driver and conductor had stepped out for lunch, leaving the keys in the vehicle. The police safely intercepted the bus after a two-kilometer chase, preventing any harm to the passengers on board.
Bus Stolen While Driver and Conductor Away
The bus, carrying about five passengers, was stationary at the Dharanaula bus stand when the driver and conductor went to a nearby hotel to eat. Seizing the opportunity, a 28-year-old man, identified as Abdul Amir Khan from Bhawali, Nainital district, sat in the driver’s seat, started the bus, and drove towards Haldwani. The sudden departure of the bus caused panic among passengers and bystanders at the bus stand.
Police Chase and Safe Evacuation
Upon noticing the bus was missing, the driver and conductor immediately informed the Dharanaula police station. Head Constable Asif Hussain, along with the conductor, pursued the vehicle. After a chase of approximately two kilometers, the police stopped the bus safely near Karbala Tiraha, ensuring all passengers were unharmed.

The young man was taken into custody and brought to the Dharanaula police station. After questioning, his family members were called, and he was challaned under the Police Act. Authorities praised the quick response of the police, noting that timely intervention prevented a potential tragedy that could have endangered the lives of the passengers.
