Zepto Among 4 Firms Issued Notices by FSSAI Over Food Safety, Labelling

New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to four companies, including the fast-track commerce platform Zepto, for alleged violations of food safety, labeling, and advertising claims. Adjudication proceedings have also been approved against Storia Foods & Beverages Pvt Ltd.

FSSAI stated on Monday that this action was taken to protect consumer interests and ensure compliance with food safety regulations. The companies issued notices include Zepto Marketplace Pvt Ltd, HealthyHey Foods LLP, Bakelite Food Processing Pvt Ltd, and BMS Lifescience.

Notice to Zepto for allegedly delivering gram flour after its expiry date

FSSAI has issued a notice to Zepto Marketplace Pvt Ltd in connection with a complaint. The complaint alleged that two packets of gram flour were delivered to a customer after their stated expiry date.

According to the regulator, the expiry date on these packets was September 12, 2026. The complaint alleged that despite this, the products were delivered after the expiry date.

FSSAI has directed Zepto to investigate the complaint and provide relevant order, delivery, warehouse, vendor, and product information.

Allegations of Misleading Claims on HealthyHey and BMS Lifescience Products

FSSAI has issued a notice to HealthyHey Foods LLP regarding its product, ‘HealthyHey Nutrition Natural Cranberry Extract 25 percent Capsules.’ According to the regulator, discrepancies were found in the color-related declarations on the product label.

Furthermore, the product’s claim of ‘Supports Urinary Tract Health’ falls under the category of health and disease-related claims. FSSAI stated that prior regulatory approval is required for such claims.

Meanwhile, BMS Lifescience has been issued a notice regarding its product, ‘HAOG’S Cranberry Urinary Tract Health Capsules.’ According to FSSAI, this product was allegedly being sold under an expired registration certificate. Furthermore, claims were made regarding urinary tract infections, kidney health, and disease prevention, which may require regulatory approval.

Questions raised over Cream Roll labeling; action taken against Storia Foods

FSSAI has issued a notice to Bakelite Food Processing Pvt Ltd regarding the labeling and marketing of its product, ‘Malpani’s Bake-Lite Puneri Cream Roll.’ This product is sold on e-commerce platforms such as Blinkit and Zepto.

According to the regulator, the product’s ingredients list includes refined flour, hydrogenated vegetable fat, margarine, and sugar, but does not mention milk, milk fat, cream, or other dairy ingredients.

FSSAI stated that the use of words like “Cream Roll” and “Creamy” in the product name and images of a creamy filling could mislead consumers about its actual ingredients.

Furthermore, FSSAI has approved adjudication proceedings against Storia Foods & Beverages Pvt Ltd for allegedly making misleading claims on its pomegranate juice product.

According to the regulator, the product contained 4 percent pomegranate juice concentrate and 12 percent apple juice concentrate. However, the product’s branding and images could create a false impression about its actual composition.

FSSAI also questioned the labeling of the reconstituted juice and its claims such as “Equivalent to 100% Fruit Juice (Reconstituted)” and “No Added Sugar.”

The regulator stated that after inspection, sampling, and label verification, the company’s explanation was found to be unsatisfactory. Subsequently, adjudication proceedings were approved against the company.
