12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum Begins Today in Delhi, PM Modi to Meet Global Leaders

New Delhi: India will host the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum at Samvidhan Sadan in the Parliament House complex on Monday, bringing together parliamentary leaders from BRICS member and partner countries to discuss cooperation and development focused on people’s needs.

The two-day forum will take place on October 26 and 27. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the event and meet the leaders of visiting delegations.

The discussions will focus on strengthening parliamentary cooperation and the role of legislatures in promoting people-centric development.

Om Birla Holds Meeting With Russian Delegation

Ahead of the forum, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held a bilateral meeting with a Russian parliamentary delegation led by Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

Both sides stressed the need to strengthen cooperation at international forums and make joint efforts to combat terrorism.

According to an official statement, Birla welcomed Volodin and his delegation on behalf of the Indian Parliament and the country’s 1.4 billion people. He highlighted the longstanding friendship between India and Russia, describing it as a relationship built on mutual trust, respect and shared aspirations.

Birla also appreciated Russia’s continued support for India in its fight against terrorism. He called for a united international response to the threat and stressed the importance of working together to promote global peace.

India-Russia Ties to Mark 80 Years in 2027

During the meeting, Birla noted that India and Russia would complete 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.

He said the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries had grown stronger under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The meeting came ahead of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum, which is expected to bring together lawmakers and parliamentary representatives from member and partner countries for discussions on shared priorities.

Forum to Focus on People-Centric Development

Earlier, while addressing a press conference at Parliament House on Thursday, Birla described the forum as a new chapter in India’s parliamentary diplomacy.

He said the event would bring together presiding officers and parliamentary leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, Union Ministers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, presiding officers of state legislatures, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries.

The central theme of the forum is “Strengthening Parliaments for People-Centric Development.” Discussions will focus on how parliamentary institutions can contribute to development that reflects people’s needs and aspirations.

The two-day meeting will provide a platform for participating countries to exchange views on parliamentary cooperation and ways to strengthen the role of legislatures in supporting inclusive development.
