22 Maoists Surrender in Odisha’s Malkangiri, Arms Seized

In a significant development in Odisha’s fight against left-wing extremism, 22 cadres of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) surrendered before the Odisha Police in the Malkangiri district on Tuesday, formally laying down their arms and renouncing violence.

High-Value Reward Carried by Cadres

The surrendered insurgents included a Divisional Committee Member (DCM) and several Area Committee Members (ACMs), carrying reward notices totaling over ₹2 crore announced by the government for bringing them in.

Weapons and Explosives Recovered

Police officials recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition, including AK-47 and INSAS rifles, several .303 rifles, explosives, gelatin sticks and tiffin bombs, reflecting the operational capability that the cadres once possessed.

Government Strategy and Rehabilitation Push

The mass surrender comes amid an ongoing revised surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy by the Odisha government, which increased incentives and support measures to encourage Maoist cadres to abandon militancy and reintegrate into mainstream society. Authorities have assured individualized rehabilitation packages including financial aid, housing support, vocational training, and other assistance.

Impact on Security and Local Stability

Senior police officials described the development as a major setback for the Maoist movement in southern Odisha, particularly in the LWE-affected Malkangiri region, long a stronghold of insurgent activity. The surrender is expected to weaken the group’s leadership, morale, and operational capacity on the ground.
