26 Naxals With ₹64 Lakh Bounty Surrender in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma

A significant development in India’s fight against left-wing extremism unfolded in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, where 26 Naxalites laid down arms and surrendered to security forces, including police and CRPF officials on Wednesday. Of these, 13 cadres carried a combined bounty of approximately ₹64-65 lakh announced on their heads, underscoring the impact of intensified operations against the outlawed outfit.

    Cadres Active Across Multiple Fronts

The surrendered members were reportedly active in various operational units of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) including the South Bastar Division, Maad Division, and Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) Division. These cadres have been involved in several violent incidents across the Sukma and adjoining Odisha regions, making their surrender a noteworthy success for counter-insurgency efforts.

    Rehabilitation Under “Poona Margem” Initiative

The surrenders took place under the state government’s “Poona Margem” rehabilitation campaign, aimed at helping Naxals transition back into mainstream society. Each surrendered cadre was given initial assistance of ₹50,000, with further support and reintegration aid to follow per government policy.

Officials said the surrendered Naxals were impressed by the government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy, which promises financial aid, skill development opportunities, and a safer path forward for former insurgents willing to abandon violence.

Setback for Naxal Movement in Bastar

Security experts view this mass surrender as a major setback for the Maoist movement in the Bastar region, where persistent operations and stronger enforcement have increasingly pressured insurgent cadres. The defections signal weakening morale and greater acceptance of rehabilitation incentives over armed struggle.

The development also aligns with broader governmental goals to reduce and ultimately eliminate left-wing extremism in affected areas, reinforcing efforts toward peace and stability in historically restive regions.
