Imphal: Three people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents in Imphal East and Thoubal districts of Manipur. Three more are reported missing, police said on Monday. Meanwhile, over 25 houses were set on fire in Kamjong district over the past 24 hours. Security has been beefed up in the affected areas following these incidents.

Suspected militants attack people collecting firewood

According to police, suspected militants allegedly opened fire on a group of people collecting firewood in Imphal East district on Monday morning. Two people died on the spot and two others were injured. Three others are missing.

A police officer said that about 10 people had gone to collect wood in the hilly and forested area near Nongshum in the morning when they were ambushed by suspected militants.

Efforts were underway to recover the bodies of the deceased following the incident. Additional security forces have been deployed to the area to search for the missing and apprehend the attackers. Police have also launched a massive search operation.

Clash between two communities in Thoubal, one dead

In another incident, one person was killed and several others injured in a violent clash between members of two communities in Thoubal district. In view of the situation, the administration imposed a curfew in the affected areas.

According to a police officer in Imphal, the violence broke out on Sunday night in Khangabok village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Thoubal police station. The village is located about 25 kilometers south of Imphal. It was reported that some people allegedly pelted stones at a ground during a music concert, which escalated the situation.

Following this, stone pelting broke out between members of both communities in Khangabok and the neighboring village of Sangaiyumpham. Some houses and vehicles were also set on fire during the violence.

Meanwhile, unidentified miscreants opened fire, hitting one person in the head. The deceased has been identified as Laishram Rakesh. According to police, he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died during treatment.

Several other people were also slightly injured in the stone pelting and were admitted to the hospital for treatment. Additional deployment of state and central security forces was made in the affected villages to prevent further escalation of the violence. Police reported that the situation was under control by Monday morning.

Curfew imposed in Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham

Following the violence, the Thoubal District Magistrate issued a curfew on Sunday night. An order issued under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) directed residents of Khangabok and Sangaiyumphum not to leave their homes from 11 p.m.

The administration took this step in view of the possibility of a breach of peace, disruption of public order, and threat to life and property. The order did not specify a specific timeframe for lifting the restrictions.

More than 25 houses set on fire in Kamjong

Meanwhile, more than 25 houses were set on fire in separate incidents in Manipur’s Kamjong district over the past 24 hours. Suspected militants allegedly targeted residential areas of the Naga and Kuki communities, forcing many civilians to flee their homes and seek refuge in the forests and nearby security camps.

According to a police officer, on Sunday, around 14 vacant houses belonging to the Naga community were set on fire by unidentified assailants in Pilong and Skip villages near the India-Myanmar border. These houses had been abandoned after previous attacks in these villages.

Following the incidents, additional security forces have been deployed in the area. Police and security agencies are monitoring the situation.
